The Ashbrook hammer is named after artist, teacher, performer, and therapeutic musician Karen Ashbrook. Bob started the trend of using colorful Acrylic for grips instead of wood, and Ron updated that design by adding an Acrylic edge that will stand up to long hours of loud playing year after year. Field tested and approved for durability and quality by the Squirrels’ Nest guys – the loudest, hardest (and craziest!) hammered dulcimer players we know, our Acrylic edges sound similar to, but outlast, Ebony. The strip of leather on the opposite edge gives a softer tone, for those times you want to channel the quieter, calmer inner squirrel.
