Padauk with Ebony edge and Bethlehem Olivewood grip. Black leather on one edge.

Length: 8 3/8 inches; Weight: 10.6 grams

Padauk (pah-DUKE) is a West African hardwood sometimes called Vermillion for the red-orange color of the heartwood when freshly cut. Strips of this color can be seen in the body of these beautiful and unique hammers. The grips are Olivewood, harvested in Bethlehem, Israel from olive trees which are no longer able produce fruit. Olivewood has a wonderful, striped grain which often swirls and curls, especially in older wood.

The Ashbrook hammer is named after artist, teacher, performer, and therapeutic musician Karen Ashbrook.  Bob started the trend of using colorful Acrylic for grips instead of wood, and Ron updated that design by adding an Acrylic edge that will stand up to long hours of loud playing year after year.  Field tested and approved for durability and quality by the Squirrels’ Nest guys – the loudest, hardest (and craziest!) hammered dulcimer players we know, our Acrylic edges sound similar to, but outlast, Ebony. The strip of leather on the opposite edge gives a softer tone, for those times you want to channel the quieter, calmer inner squirrel.
